If you need to file a federal tax return, but are not eligible for a Social Security Number, you must obtain an Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN) from the IRS. Although it sounds simple, the ITIN process can be complex.
You ITIN also allows you to:
- Get a refund from your income withheld by the IRS, if you qualify.
- File your taxes and claim dependents you support in the U.S., Mexico or Canada.
- It may allow you to open a bank account or apply for a mortgage loan.
